Romanian church in Boian, Canada, consecrated three years after devastating fire

The new Romanian church in Boian, Alberta, was consecrated on the Dormition feast after a 2023 fire destroyed the old building. The ceremony was attended by bishops and metropolitans, and Patriarch Daniel highlighted the church as a symbol of hope and generational continuity.

Add Basilica as your preferred source on Google The Romanian community’s new church in Boian, Alberta, Canada, was consecrated on the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, three years after a fire destroyed the old place of worship .

His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada described the occasion as “a new rebirth for the Boian community”, as well as a message for other Romanian communities in the diaspora.

Events marking the consecration took place from 14 to 16 August and were attended by Metropolitans Iosif of Western and Southern Europe and Nicolae of the Americas.

The celebrations began on the eve of the feast with Vespers and the Lamentations of the Dormition of the Mother of God. On the feast day itself, the three hierarchs celebrated the consecration of the new church, followed by the Divine Liturgy.

On this festive occasion for the Boian community, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel sent a message emphasising that the new church represents more than the rebuilding of a lost structure.

“Following the severe trial the community endured in 2023, when the old place of worship was consumed by fire, today bears luminous witness that hope can spring from adversity, solidarity can grow out of suffering, and that, from loss, through faith and common endeavour, a new beginning can be born,” His Beatitude said.
